Mary Mac’s Tea Room on Ponce De Leon Avenue is an Atlanta Restaurant that has been feeding customers Southern classics since 1945. It’s so popular that the Georgia House of Representatives dubbed it “Atlanta’s Dining Room.” Beyonce, former President Jimmy Carter and the Dalia Lama are among the famous diners along with many Georgia lawmakers. I had not been in years and Steve had never been.

This Atlanta restaurant treats you like family

One thing about Mary Mac’s is you are always treated like you are special. We were greeted warmly and enjoyed conversations with other diners while we waited. Our server, Courtney, made sure we had all we needed. We also spoke with other employees who left us with memories we won’t forget.

Let’s talk food

It should be no surprise that I started off with deviled eggs. Steve ordered chicken livers as a starter. I forgot how much I liked them.

Another “shocker” for those who know me–I ordered roast turkey and dressing. And I carbed it up with whipped potatoes and mac and cheese. That mac and cheese is the best anywhere and Steve made his disappear quickly.

Steve ordered chicken fried chicken. It was so good I wish I had ordered it, too. He also got fired okra, which is cooked the way our Southern grandmas made it.

Dessert anyone

You can’t leave Mary Mac’s without dessert. The last time I ate at this Atlanta Restaurant, which was many, many years ago, I had the banana pudding. I have not forgotten it. This time I opted for one of my late mother’s favorites–coconut cake. The roasted coconut on top and the delectable filling have me wishing I bought an entire cake home. Steve chose the classic peach cobbler with ice cream. I looked away for a moment and it was gone.

Getting to this Atlanta restaurant is easy

Mary Mac’s has a parking lot out back but it’s often full. We went around 2 p.m. and it was less crowded. There’s also street parking. This Atlanta restaurant is a classic and worthy of a day trip just to try their food. Have you ever eaten at Mary Mac’s?
